Western New York Outdoors
A Parks and Recreation Guide to locations for
outdoor adventures in WNY.
Lake Erie
The Eastern Basin extends from Buffalo, New York to
Erie, PA with shoreline along Chautauqua County and Erie County.
Description:
Lake Erie is the southernmost and smallest of the five freshwater Great
Lakes. Measuring approximately 240 miles wide and 57 miles north to south.
The average depth is about 60 feet. The winds over the warm water produces
the infamous lake effect snow machine that makes the Buffalo area a winter
wonderland. It is very popular for recreational uses such as boating,
fishing and viewing spectacular sunsets. The eastern basin produces trophy
11 lb walleyes in the summer and excellent smallmouth bass along the shorelines.
The Buffalo River flows west, from the confluence of Cayuga Creek, thru the city
of Buffalo and into Lake Erie. This is where the US Coast Guard station,
Erie Basin Marina, Port of Buffalo and Buffalo Lighthouse are located.
Angling and canoeing are popular here along the Urban Canoe Trail. The old
grain, historic concrete Central Elevator is preserved here too.
The Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park is located at the foot of
Pearl and Main Streets. The Naval Museum has several ships docked at the
Buffalo Entrance Channel under the Skyway. The USS Little Rock, USS
Croaker and USS The Sullivans.
The NFTA Boat
Harbor is located along Fuhrman Boulevard and is New York State's largest
marina. An Outer Harbor Waterfront Trail is being developed from here to
Lighthouse Park and will provide much needed public access.
There are other state boat launch sites at Sturgeon Point Marina, Dunkirk
Harbor, near the Niagara-Mohawk Power peninsula and Barcelona Marina. The
south shoreline is part of the
Seaway Trail.
